Job Shadowing
is an academically motivating educational activity dedicated to giving kids an up-close look at the world of work. Kicking off on February 1, 2001 and continuing throughout the school year, Job Shadowing gives students across America the chance to "shadow" a workplace mentor as he or she goes through a normal day on the job. This gives young people a chance to see how the skills learned in school relate to the workplace. In Illinois, and throughout the nation, elected officials, business and government representatives will share their time and expertise with a middle school or high school student to help create the link for students to connect academics with careers and citizenship.
Several judges have already responded to our request to participate. They are John Barra, Judith Brawka, Donald Cadagin, Leslie Graves, Jeffrey O’Connor, Daniel Stack, Ashton Waller and James Wexstten.

This year’s Illinois Judges Association Annual Convention was a smashing success. Our luncheon speaker, Scott Turow, gave an entertaining and informative talk on the process of the law and writing. The afternoon presentation, Who Can You Believe? Objective Indicators of Deception in the Courtroom, was presented before a standing room only crowd. Thanks go out to Michele Lowrance, Mary Ellen Coghlan and their committee for the hard work that was obvious to all in attendance. As a reminder, this year’s convention will take place at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel from December 12th to the 14th (save the date). We hope and expect this year’s convention to be well attended, enlightening and entertaining.
The Compensation Review Board will meet on March 19th. Ann Jorgensen, Richard William Austin and I will speak to them concerning judicial compensation for all judges in Illinois. Again, the ISBA and CBA will be preparing testimony and exhibits to present before the Committee. Any ideas, suggestions or contacts are greatly appreciated.
The IJA has been supplying speakers for the Supreme Court’s Speaker’s Committee and are most appreciative of Chief Justice Moses Harrison’s leadership in this area. The You Drink & Drive, You Lose program for 15 year-olds is receiving rave reviews. The perils of drinking and driving as well as risky behavior behind the wheel is education, we hope, that will save lives.
Congrats to Chief Judge Timothy C. Evans of the Circuit Court of Cook County on his recent award from John Marshall Law School.
Congratulations to Justice Mary W. McDade of the Third Appellate District and Judge Randye A. Kogan from Cook County for their appointment to the ISBA Lincoln Award Judges Committee.
Kudos to Judge Jesse Reyes of Cook County on his presentation before the Hispanic Law Students Assn.
Our sincere appreciation goes out to the Conference of Chief Judges for allowing us to send you this monthly message that we hope will keep you up-to-date on events throughout the state.
Let us know what you are doing and involved in so we can inform your brothers and sisters on the bench.
